Transkei Info

The former Transkei (now the Eastern Cape) has an area covering a total of 45,000 km2 and is bordered by the Umtamvuna River in the north and the Kei River in the South. The Indian Ocean and the Drakensberg mountain range serve as the Transkei's eastern and western borders.

The majority of the population are Xhosa speaking. The population is estimated at 2,4 million people.

The majority of people subsist from their land. Cattle, chicken, goats, sheep and small scale  agriculture are the bases on which the AmaXhosa people survive. Most people have very few resources and have historically relied on money repatriated by the +/- 400,000 migrant workers.

In the Transkei region, unemployment is at a very high level: 48.5%.

The AmaXhosa rely on rainfall/rivers for their water needs. Firewood and paraffin are the fuel for cooking and heating. Candles and paraffin is used for light.

Our project base is at the Haven Horse Safaris at the Haven Hotel. The Haven Hotel is situated on the Wild coast on the Cwebe/Dwesa Reserve about 1,5 hours from Umtata.
