Equine Info

Horses, donkeys and mules (equines) play a very important role in the day to day lives of the AmaXhosa people. They are used as transport, for work purposes ie checking fences, herding animals and for the collection of water and firewood. Many of the people are employed because they own equines and can fullfill certain jobs with them. Much of the former Transkei has a very limited road network. Footpaths and tracks connect houses with waterpoints, other villages, shops, clinics, hospitals etc. With time more and more roads are being created and cars are being used. The majority of people still walk or use equines for transport.

Woman and girls do not ride equines but are transported in carts. Men and boys are the ones that ride equines and drive the carts. The population of equines in the former Transkei is unknown. What we know is that there are thousands, tens of thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands of equines. Most are in desperate need of help!
The majority of the AmaXhosa people are impoverished and struggle to put food on their table once a day let alone three times a day. Their equines are forced to fend for themselves living exclusively off the grazing. The complete lack of medication, limited resources, knowledge and care leads to neglect, misshandling and in many cases abuse.
